Student works will be exhibited in the gallery (room 1160) on the South Bend campus, 220 Dean Johnson Blvd. until Sept. 30. All events are free and open to the public.

Ivy Tech Community College selects Thomas G. Coley as Chancellor for North Central (South Bend) Region

INDIANAPOLIS–Ivy Tech Community College has selected Dr. Thomas G. Coley as its Chancellor for the North Central region. Dr. Coley will begin his position June 1 and will replace Dr. Virginia Calvin who retired earlier this year.

“I am excited to take on a leadership role and join the excellent faculty and staff at Ivy Tech committed to providing the quality educational and training experiences that contribute to student academic and career success and help meet the region’s workforce and economic development needs,” said Coley.

Ivy Tech’s North Central region serves Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall and St. Joseph Counties with three full-service campuses located in South Bend, Goshen and Warsaw.

“Dr. Coley brings a wealth of experience in higher education,” said Ivy Tech Community College President Thomas J. Snyder. “He’s a proven leader in building key relationships within the community and with four-year institutions. He will be a tremendous asset to the region. We are pleased to add Dr. Coley to our Ivy Tech team.”

Search committee chair Chris Murphy, Chairman and CEO of First Source Bank, said “We were very pleased with the deep experience Dr. Coley brings to Ivy Tech, but more importantly his track record of academic excellence and colleague engagement confirmed he was the best person for this important position.”

Dr. Coley has held faculty and administrative positions in higher education for more than 30 years. Since 2005, he has served as President of Scott Community College in Scott County, Iowa, part of the East Iowa Community College District, where he managed the overall operations, as well as coordinated and directed the development of financial resources and facility operations at multiple sites. Under his leadership, construction was completed on a new $2.5 million Culinary Arts and Hospitality building, as well as new physical science labs and applied technologies classrooms.

The East Iowa Community College District enrolls more than 9,000 each fall and more than 30,000 students each year in its business and industry, continuing education and adult education classes.

In addition to his role as President, Coley also served as Vice Chancellor of Instruction since 2008 where he was responsible for leading the development and evaluation plans for instructional programs and services, coordinating the program evaluation process for vocational technical programs, and chairing the district’s instructional council. He also increased the number of articulation agreements with two and four year colleges, achieved approval of the district’s first Educational Plan, and established a cost modeling structure for instruction decision making.

Coley also served as Vice Chancellor for Technology and Communications Systems for the District from 2005 to 2008 where he provided leadership in the development of the strategic and cost-effective use of technology initiatives to enhance teaching, learning, communication, and work throughout the district. As a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet he provided visionary leadership towards enhancing the district’s effectiveness, quality and innovation through technology.

Prior to his roles at Scott Community College, Coley served as Vice President of Instruction and Student Services at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, from 2000 to 2005, where one of his many accomplishments included building tech prep and dual enrollment partnerships with high schools and increasing dual enrollment by more than 50 percent. In addition, he led the college’s initiatives to establish international partnerships, including delivery of English as a Second Language courses with the Ministry of Education’s China Study Center of International Exchange in Beijing, China.

Prior to his role at Black Hawk College, Coley was Assistant Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1997 to 2000. While at Cuyahoga, Coley coordinated the development and implementation of the college’s enrollment growth model. He also served as the lead administrator for the successful 10-year reaccreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities.

In addition, Coley has served as Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs for the Oregon State System of Higher Education; Executive Assistant to the President at California State University-Fullerton; and Assistant Provost of the Division of Human and College Resources at University of Maryland-College Park.

He has also served as faculty at many of these institutions teaching management and education policy.

Coley earned his Doctorate degree in Education Administration and Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Moorhead State University in Minnesota.

He has made numerous professional presentations on higher education leadership, student services, and academic administration at the League for Innovation in Community Colleges, American Educational Research Association, American Association of Higher Education, and the American Association of Community Colleges. Nationally, he has served on the board of the National Council of Instructional Administrators, and as a member of the Commission on Workforce and Economic Development and the Commission on Communications and Marketing of the American Association of Community Colleges. His current involvement on community boards, include Quad Cities United Way, United Neighbor-Davenport, and Bethany Children and Families.

SOUTH BEND, IND. (March 7, 2011) – Ivy Tech’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host a discussion on the film Inherit the Wind at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1 in room 1148 at the South Bend campus, 220 Dean Johnson Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.

Inherit the Wind is a 1960 film adaptation of the play of the same name. The film fictionalizes the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial.

The event will feature student essay readings and comments and reflections by students and faculty.

FRACTAL ART PRESENTATION AT IVY TECH FEB. 25

SOUTH BEND, IND. (Feb. 21, 2010) – Ivy Tech Community College will host the second of their fractal art presentations on Friday, Feb. 25, 6:30 – 8 pm in the community room at their Elkhart County campus, 22531 County Road 18, Goshen. The event is free and open to the public.

More than 70 people attended the first presentation last week which introduced the concept based on the Mandelbrot Set. Fractal artist Kevin Gross, of Goshen, will present examples of the art that can be created at the Feb. 25 event. Examples of Gross’s art can be seen at Gross’s website, http://www.spiritfireimages.com, and he will have pieces on display at the presentation. Terry Johns, assistant professor of mathematics, presented general information on the fractal art concept earlier this month. Although the Feb. 25 event was developed as a companion presentation, Johns says first-timers will still appreciate and enjoy it as a stand-alone presentation.

“I warn people that creating fractal art is addictive,” says Johns. “I’ve been doing it for 20 years.

Now I get the added enjoyment of seeing other people easily grasp the concept and start creating their own art. Participants will find Kevin’s presentation engaging and they may be surprised to discover that math is fun.”

Johns worked with the Ivy Tech-Elkhart County student Math Club to put the presentations together. The club boasts more than 35 members and is also coordinating a sale of Gross’s art as a fundraiser.

PHILIP NAMED IVY TECH-NORTH CENTRAL INTERIM CHANCELLOR

SOUTH BEND, IND. (Jan. 5, 2011) – Chuck Philip has been appointed interim chancellor for Ivy Tech Community College-North Central. Philip currently serves as the region’s vice chancellor of Academic Affairs, a position he has held since July 2008.

Virginia Calvin retired from the chancellor position on December 31 after 10 years of service to the college. The search for a new regional chancellor will begin in the coming weeks.

Philip brings over 30 years of community college leadership experience to this position. Prior to joining Ivy Tech, he served as vice president, Academic and Student Affairs at Lake Michigan College. He also served as president of Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tenn.; dean of faculty at Delta College in University Center, Mich.; dean of instruction at Kalamazoo Valley Community College; and division chair at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tenn.

Philip holds a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University; a master of science in Science Education from George Peabody College; and a bachelor of arts in Biology from California State University.

The North Central Region serves students and employers in St. Joseph, Elkhart, Kosciusko and Marshall counties from campuses in South Bend, Goshen and Warsaw. The region annually serves 15,000 full- and part-time students through its academic programs, and another 3,500 employees and citizens through the Department of Workforce and Economic Development.
